Mastering the technical aspects of improving your art presence on Instagram
No doubt, showing your Art on social media can be very challenging. Instagram has become one of the biggest and most accessible platforms for promoting art, techniques and concepts. However, many artists really struggle to get their work seen; are there any ways of improving the visibility of your art on Instagram? We discussed the basic principles of promoting your art on the platform previously, and this week we will explore a few more technical aspects of developing a successful art account on Instagram. Fear not, the following paragraphs include some useful tools, popular art hashtags and ideas of getting your fantastic drawings and paintings out there!
Starting an Instagram business account
Monitoring your account growth, visibility and target audience is not very easy without using some tools. Converting your Instagram account to a business account should be one of the first steps in this direction. It’s easy and free and it actually helps you find out who and when visits your page, the demographics of your audience and what impact each of your posts had. You can do that directly from your Instagram account, following a few very straightforward steps. This will not magically turn your account into the most successful one, however it will really help you understand who follows you and what their likes and dislikes are. It will probably take some time until the analytics start working properly (they need to analyse data of approximately a week before they provide any useful information) but in the long run it will give you an estimate of your audience.
Platforms and useful apps
Using platforms like Hootsuite can also be very helpful in terms of managing your Instagram account. Scheduling posts and managing multiple accounts (see integration paragraph below) is made much easier. I haven’t used this tool myself but it has been recommended by several specialists including Cool Ventures in Bath. Similarly, there are various Instagram management applications for free on Play Store and App Store. Those can help you manage your content, followers and get yourself protected by bots. A quick Google search will give you an idea of useful tools. An app I have found very useful is Cleaner for Instagram which allows you to find out who follows or unfollows you.
Using the right hashtags for your art on Instagram
If you have used Instagram for some time you probably already know that using appropriate and popular hashtags can have an enormous impact on the visibility of your posts to a larger audience. There are endless hashtags out there, each one covering a different type of art. You need to find out and decide which ones to use every time. I have a selection of those I usually use below. Remember, you can only use up to 30 hashtags every time!
Quick tip: make your own list, save it on your phone and then simply copy and paste before you post. Here are some of my favourite art hashtags on Instagram:

If you are really serious about posting your art on Instagram and you are aiming to get sales through the platform you might want to consider paid promotion. Again this is a built in service provided by Instagram itself. It works exactly like paid advertisement. You can decide the audience (gender, age, location, interest) and the budget you want to spend and Instagram does the rest. Your post will automatically appear in front of thousands of people around the globe.
Integration with other channels: Twitter, Facebook, WordPress and Tumblr
Instagram gives you the option to automatically publish your posts on other platforms. This helps you reach out to a larger audience without spending a single penny and without wasting time on posting on multiple platforms separately. All you need to do is connect your Facebook, Twitter etc account with Instagram, and authorise the application to automatically publish there, as soon as you post. Easy, at no cost and effort. Do activate this option on your Instagram and bring some extra traffic to your art. Only thing to remember is that sometimes the posts do not appear perfectly optimised from one platform to another. You might need to experiment and do a little trial and error before you find the format that pleases you and your audience the most.
Maintenance of a good Instagram account is not easy and it takes loads of time and commitment. However, the benefits of being active on social media are big and make it worth the time and effort. Don’t get discouraged and be persistent both with your art work and your online presence. Also, remember that nothing beats good content and genuine interaction with people on the platform. This is only a small starting point but as you go along you will discover more and become much better. Use these technical tips wisely and in conjunction with basic principles of posting on social media and surely you will gradually see your art reaching a much wider audience.
