Discover Bath: Top Creative Spaces & Art Groups for Contemporary Fine Art

Living in the Georgian city of Bath is an immersive experience. The Palladian and Victorian architecture inevitably helps the mind travel to an era of elegance, period dresses and social events.

How does this environment lend itself to an emerging scene of contemporary fine art though?

The sources of inspiration are numerous as are the thriving art communities and studios in central Bath, UK.

Museums and public galleries

I often visit the Holburne Museum Bath and Victoria Art Gallery on Bridge Street to view exhibitions both from local art practitioners as well as touring shows of established artists of national and international acclaim. A recent show that caught my eye was the Toulouse Lautrec poster exhibition in Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.

BRSLI (Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution) on Queen Square is another local organisation offering regular talks by specialists in the fields of photography, painting, authors, art advisors and collectors.

Art studios and commercial galleries

44AD Art Space on 4 Abbey Street, Black Chalk studios in Monmouth Place, Roseberry Road Studios and Bath Artists’ Studios in The Old Malthouse (Comfortable Place, Bath) are local pockets of creativity. They host regular exhibitions by some of the most active and upcoming names in the art scene of Bath. From open studios to temporary exhibitions, I try to stay in touch with the Studios’ programme to draw inspiration and meet local artistic talent.

Visage on Wood Street and 8 Holland Street (on Brock Street, right next to the Royal Crescent) are only some of the commercial galleries in Bath that represent a wide array of local and national artists.

Barton Street gallery is an up and coming gallery and creative space in Bath. I very much look forward to this promising project taking off. I eagerly await for the art projects, communities and services they will be offering for local artists, collectors and art enthusiasts alike.

Art communities and groups

The Art Circle in Bath is a fresh and growing community of over 120 local fine artists. It provides a free to join, welcoming space for sharing information and cultivating creative collaborations.

Private art studio and viewings

I am also aspiring to establish my own fine art studio in Bath within 2025. Apart from a working space for developing my geometric abstract oil paintings, I am intending to open my studio doors to local fine art collectors. With the latest art work on display and available to purchase, my studio will be a space for contemplating art, discussing and finding out more about my painting techniques, sources of inspiration and future creative endeavours.

So, is Bath a welcoming place for contemporary fine art?

The answer is definitely yes. A wide range of private galleries, public museums and exhibitions spaces, fine art groups and communities, weave a rich tapestry of artistic activity in the city. Either as a resident in Bath or a visitor, you are likely to encounter art fairs, shows and interesting talks and presentations. Hopefully, I will get to meet you soon in one of those events.
